City of Poznań · deadline 2 November 2026, 17:00

Poznań: cultural call closes on 2 November

The City of Poznań is running a call for multiannual projects in culture, the arts and heritage, to be delivered in 2027–2029 across seven priorities. Applications may be submitted by NGOs and other entities eligible under Poland’s Public Benefit and Volunteer Work Act. The deadline is 2 November 2026 at 17:00. Applicants should confirm that their project matches a selected priority and check the co-financing rules and full competition documentation. No amount is stated here because the accessible BIP announcement could not be rechecked for that figure.

Polish Ministry of Culture · update of 28 October 2026

Ministry programmes for 2027: calls delayed

The Polish Ministry of Culture has announced that its 2027 programme calls will open later because work is continuing to restore the SOP application system after a security incident. Data entered by 5 October were recovered from backup. No new deadlines, budgets or programme rules have yet been published, so organisations should not base their schedules on earlier assumptions. Preparation can continue, but the submission date must be confirmed against the ministry’s new official timetable once it is released.

During rehearsals for “Wesele” (“The Wedding”) at Teatr Nowy in Poznań, I met Mikołaj Grabowski. Our conversation was informal and friendly: we discussed plans to stage Witold Gombrowicz’s “Ślub” (“The Marriage”) at the Shota Rustaveli National Theatre in Tbilisi, exchanged artistic ideas and considered how to bring the project to life together.

We contacted Rita Gombrowicz, the writer’s widow, and obtained permission to translate the play into Georgian. The Plac Teatralny Foundation commissioned the translation from Keti Kantaria and agreed with the theatre’s management that the premiere would take place on the main stage.

As part of the preparations, together with Mikołaj Grabowski, Paweł Dobrzycki and Tornike Tsirekidze, we developed “Projekt Gombrowicz — Imaginarium Nowy Świat” (“Project Gombrowicz — New World Imaginarium”) as a starting point for work on the production. On 2–3 October 2024, we met students from the theatre university and the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, working on scenes from “Ślub” and proposals for the stage design.

The next step will be to stage the premiere at the national theatre in Georgia.

Between major artistic projects, we are modernising the Plac Teatralny Foundation’s website and developing the News section and its English-language version. We are working on an online shop supporting creative professionals and a mobile app with information about grants and cultural events.

At the same time, we are digitising project management, developing our social media communication and preparing a YouTube channel devoted to the economics of culture. We want to be closer to artists, work more efficiently and support culture more effectively.

Hiroaki Yamaguchi — from a friendly encounter to a major project

Hiroaki Yamaguchi — portrait in a blue shirt against a leafy background.

Sometimes the most ambitious ventures begin with an ordinary conversation. That was the case when we met Hiroaki Yamaguchi, a Japanese director, actor and founder of the Konoshitayami theatre in Kyoto.

A friendly encounter, conversations about theatre and a shared passion for art gave rise to an idea that grew into the two-year international project “Ambasador – Kultura” (“Ambassador of Culture”, 2018–2019), carried out by the Plac Teatralny Foundation in cooperation with Japanese partners.

The project included a tour by the Japanese theatre company in Warsaw, Poznań and Kraków, a study visit to Japan, lectures, artistic encounters and a Japanese Theatre Showcase in Poland. Numerous cultural institutions were involved, and the Embassy of Japan granted its honorary patronage.

Today, we revisit Hiroaki and this remarkable collaboration as a reminder that major cultural projects grow above all out of encounters between people, mutual trust and friendship.

An important step towards social security for artists

On 8 October 2026, the Polish Sejm adopted the Act on Social Security for People Working in Artistic Professions.

The bill received 232 votes in favour, 197 against and 4 abstentions.

This is an important moment for Poland’s artistic community, which has spent decades seeking systemic solutions to ensure access to social and health insurance.

The new provisions are particularly relevant to creative professionals working under civil-law contracts, carrying out artistic projects and earning irregular incomes. They provide for the possibility of public funding to help cover insurance contributions.

This is an important step towards recognising artistic work as a profession that requires meaningful social protection.

The bill has been referred to the Senate. The legislative process is not yet complete.

Grotowski, Wajda and Szymborska in Havana

Poland is taking part in the celebrations of the Month of Europe in Cuba. A lecture on Jerzy Grotowski at Teatro Ludi in Havana has been announced for 7 November. The programme also includes a screening of Andrzej Wajda’s “Polowanie na muchy” (“Hunting Flies”) as part of the European Film Festival; the venue and screening time will be announced separately. The unveiling of a bust of Wisława Szymborska at Casa de la Poesía was also scheduled for 22 October.

This is an example of cultural diplomacy bringing together theatre, film and literature and creating opportunities for Polish artists to meet audiences abroad.
