Grotowski - from shamanism to theater.

The Polish Foundation of Performing Artists “Plac Teatralny” together with the Chakassian National Drama Theatre in Abakan began the implementation of the “Grotowski – from Shamanism to Theater” project. On July 30, 2018, a four-person team from Poland consisting of Bartosz Bandura – choreographer, Filip Frątczak – actor, Artur Pałyga – playwright, and Krzysztof Tyczko – Russian literature translator, flew to Abakan and further with the Chakassian group, composed of Maras Chebodaev – director, Saiana Ulturgasheva – actress, and Aleksei Sagataev – actor, into the heart of the virgin taiga to meet with Siberian shamans. We will learn to achieve shamanic trance and meditative states to confront them with the actor’s training created by Jerzy Grotowski. Based on this, we will build our own actor’s training, which will take into account both ways of accessing internal resources. We already invite you to three free acting workshops that we will organize as part of the project in Poznań, Gorzów Wielkopolski, and Abakan. Artur Pałyga travels to Khakassia to collect documentary materials that will serve him to write a drama called “The Shaman.” The “Plac Teatralny” Foundation plans to stage this text in the 2018/2019 season. Thanks to both workshops, Krzysztof Tyczko discovers the space of actor’s emotions that have significant importance in translations of Russian literature. We will conclude the project on August 15, 2018, in Skolimów, where the Polish project base was prepared for us by ZASP – the Association of Polish Artists of Theater, Film, Radio, and Television. We already invite you to follow the project’s report on the specially created fan page on FB. The author and coordinator of the project is Filip Frątczak. The project is financed by the Open Competition organized by the Polish-Russian Center for Dialogue and Agreement. The patron of the “Grotowski – from Shamanism to Theater” project is the Cronimet PL company from Inowrocław. The Polish-Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry supported us.

The Grotowski Project: where shamanism meets theatre

The starting point was a comparison between actor training inspired by Jerzy Grotowski’s work and the trance and meditation practices of Siberian shamans. The participants explored ways of working with the body, voice and the actor’s inner resources.

The programme included an expedition to Khakassia and encounters in the taiga. The Polish team’s departure for Abakan was planned for 30 July 2018, with the project concluding on 15 August in Skolimów. The Polish base was prepared by ZASP — the Association of Polish Stage Artists.

Actor training and documentation

The project aimed to develop an original training method combining both approaches. Free workshops were announced in Poznań, Gorzów Wielkopolski and Abakan. The films document the encounters, practices and acting work.

Artur Pałyga collected material for his play “The Shaman”, which the Foundation planned to stage in the 2018/2019 season. Krzysztof Tyczko’s participation connected workshop experience with his work as a translator of Russian literature.
